Family fair fun

Last weekend we went up to Dallas to visit family and friends for assorted birthday celebrations and to see out-of-state visitors.  While we were there, we made sure to set aside some time to go to the state fair.

I have so many memories of the state fair from growing up.  I used to dance with my dance group every year in the Embarcadero building, while my dad memorized the Ginsu knives presentation.  “It slices, it dices, it cuts tomatoes so thin they only have one side!” – it’s a phrase used often in my childhood.

Then, after I got married, I enjoyed taking my Ohio-born husband, Nick, to the fair to meet Big Tex and experience a Fletcher’s corn dog, and do other things that are inherently part of every Texan’s upbringing.

This time Nick and I went with my parents and my aunt Rhonda and uncle Jeff.

We concentrated on the most important exhibits – corn dogs, funnel cakes, turkey legs, deep fried grilled cheese sandwiches, fried pineapple upside down cakes and chocolate nut covered ice cream bars.

We didn’t go too crazy and try the fried bubble gum (which is actually a marshmallow covered in pink batter) or the deep fried bacon (just what it sounds like), but we all walked away with sufficient junk food highs.

There’s a huge livestock show at the fair and we took the time to see some of the animals.  Since we were there on the last day, most of the animals had been cleared out, but I got a few shots of what was left.

As I’ve mentioned before, my dad is a part time photographer and we like to shoot together occasionally.  This was the perfect opportunity, so we put Nick and my mom on the ferris wheel and walked around the midway with our cameras.

Here are a few of my shots from the midway.  I tried to use a street photography style of shooting, but I’ve never really been that good at it.  Maybe I’ve just never tried street photography at a midway…

I’ve already posted a lot of photos, but a post about the state fair wouldn’t be complete with out some shots of the ferris wheel…

Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
