On Saturday I shot the Texas v. Kansas football game in Austin.
The final score was Texas 43, Kansas 0. It wasn’t well attended, there weren’t any unbelievable plays and it wasn’t a game that really meant anything. For most people, it wasn’t a memorable game. For me, it was the best game this season – mostly because I was there.
It all started a while back when I was assisting Statesman photographer Rodolfo Gonzalez with a fashion shoot. I mentioned that I love shooting sports and he suggested I ask Nell Carroll (assistant photo editor) if I could shoot a UT game some time. To sum it up, I asked Nell and Jay Godwin (photo editor), and they said yes. They lent me their extra pass and I was on my way.
I shot the game with Statesman staffers Ralph Barrera and Ricardo Brazziell. Not only are they fantastic shooters, but really great guys to work with! As a freelancer, I often have to work alone, so it was really nice to work on a team with other photographers, especially ones who are so respected.
Anyway, when we got out on the field, Ralph and Ricardo took the UT end zone and I took the Kansas end zone. It was pretty apparent after the first few minutes that Kansas probably wouldn’t do anything exciting, so we changed our strategy a little bit and I ended up on the sidelines. Other than the team coverage, the rest of the game was much like any other football game, except the accommodations were much nicer than what I’m used to.
Alright, let’s get to the photos. You probably want to see the action, so here it is…
Even though it was a blow out, there were a few injuries…
And here are a few sideline and crowd shots…
Of course, there were a lot of celebration shots…
It was a great time! Sometimes I can’t believe I get paid for this job. Thanks to the Statesman staff for letting me tag along!
