Going down town

Last weekend I made a trip up to Dallas to do some shooting for a couple of art shows I’ll be participating in up there.  I grew up in the Dallas area and I’m somewhat familiar with down town, but as anyone who’s lived outside of a major city can tell you, actually navigating within the city is very difficult.

I knew I wanted to get some night shots of the city, so I recruited the help of my dad, who works as a civil engineer for the city and is also a fellow photographer.  He took me to several places to get different angles of the skyline at night.

The best view we found was on the edge of the city at the Trinity River.  There are many places to stop and set up a tripod, but most of them aren’t safe enough to stay for very long, especially at night.  The photo above was taken from a scenic overlook area.  We were able to go in the evening as the sun was setting behind us, which is why the glass buildings are so bright against the dark sky.

Below is one of the most iconic buildings in the Dallas skyline.  We were driving down the street and I made my dad circle back and let me out.  I shot the photo from the bus lane while standing in the street.  The light at the intersection behind me was red, but I only had the span of about one light cycle to capture a decent photo.

Most of the places we went were perfectly safe and legal.  Others may not have been, but we got out safely with some decent images to show from it.

More photos from my Dallas adventures will be in my next blog post.
