Something Real in 2010

Last year was an interesting one for me.  It started out with a glamorous VIP trip to the Grammys, which was book ended by coverage of livestock shows in the rain.

During that time I was nearing the end of my fourth year on staff at the San Marcos Daily Record.  By April it was announced that our presses would be shutting down and our printing would be moved to Austin.

I was tired, so I took advantage of that time of transition and quit my staff job to start my own business.  From there, I rearranged my priorities.  I wouldn’t have to explain to my family why I couldn’t see them for Christmas.  I could take time off if I needed it and work when I needed to.  I could volunteer at church and I even went on a mission trip to Galveston with the youth group.  I saw friends and family that I hadn’t seen in years.

The photo at the top is the Huggins family on July 4, 2010.  We had a family reunion at the farm for the first time in, well, maybe ever.  It’s a good representation of my “Gettin’ up next to somethin’ real” in 2010.

The slide show at the top focuses mainly on shots from assignments I did this year thanks to the San Marcos Daily Record, the Austin American Statesman, the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, MyTexasNews.com, CFPO-PAL, The Journey UMC and other various news agencies and organizations.  Thanks to them for teaching me that my job, no matter how passionate I am about it, doesn’t have to take over my life.
