On Friday night I was in Round Rock for the Statesman as the dragons played Stony Point.
This is the time in the season when teams are battling for a spot in the playoffs. A victory on either side of this game would have ensured a spot to the winning team in the playoff bracket. Round Rock grabbed that place with a very close 30-29 win.
The first half looked like a typical game, nothing terribly exciting, and Stony Point was up by a touch down at half time. When the third quarter started, both teams scored quickly and the battle was on.
In the fourth, Stony Point scored and went for a two-point conversion, but Round Rock intercepted a pass in the end zone. It was a crucial error, knowing in hindsight that the two points would have put Stony Point in the lead when the clock ran out. Instead, Stony Point was up 29-23, and there were about four minutes left in the game.
Round Rock raced down the field, with the help of the game MVP running back Deandre Story, and scored with seconds remaining, clenching a win and a spot in the 5A playoffs.
It was an exciting second half, perfect for photos. (I do love to photograph a good running back.) Here are a few of my favorites.
The Round Rock players and coaches were pretty excited. One of them got so excited he got sick on the sidelines. His team mates and coached cheered him on as he vomited.
