I recently shot The Hub bike shop in San Marcos for Community Impact Newspaper.
The Hub is a shop that specializes in almost every kind of bike you can think of, at least all of them without motors. Last year they were the number one bike shop for unicycles, though I didn’t see any in the shop when I was there. They sell and repair bicycles and keep a unique atmosphere.
There are four main characters to The Hub story. At the top of the post is bike technician Andy Howard and shop dog, Dixie. Alex Lincoln is another bike technician there and the shop cat, Sprocket, completes the cast.
The Hub opened a few years ago in down town San Marcos and Andy and Alex had to completely redo the inside of the building. They used any supplies they could get their hands on, like scrap wood and metal from recycling centers and dumpsters. Eventually they created all of their bike racks from scrap metal and two back rooms were created with other scrap materials.
I asked how they stayed in business in a location that sees businesses come and go every 6 months and Andy said, “I have no idea.”
