Getting by with lens envy

I was out shooting the UIL state tennis tournament today in Austin for the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung.

I saw a couple of very skilled photographers who I look up to while I was there.  Though they’re very nice and helpful people, I do get a bit intimidated by their large lenses and expensive equipment.  Okay, maybe more jealousy than intimidation.  But still, it makes me think, “how am I supposed to get good shots when they have all of the gear and experience that they have?”

I don’t doubt that Julia Robinson and Erich Schlegel and other great photographers there made amazing images and I’m definitely not trying to compete with photographers who are way out of my league, but here are a few of my best action shots from a singles match (with my smaller than 300mm lenses).

New Braunfels High School’s Tanner Brown is the athlete in the photos and he was competing in the semifinals against Daniel Hernandez of Pearland.  I used an 80-200mm f2.8 lens for these shots.  Some were taken with a D700 and some were taken with a D200.  The D200 gives me a 1.5x zoom because it’s not full frame, but the image quality isn’t quite as good.

I’ve been itching to buy a 400mm f2.8 for a few months now, but I can’t seem to figure out how to get my hands on one without selling my house.  So if anyone wants to get rid of their 400mm f2.8 lens, I am more than willing to take it off your hands! …as long as you don’t want my house in return…
