Pink Heals

Rene Slataper is shown taking a photo of a pink fire truck through a large pink ribbon outside of the city’s conference center.  Cancer survivors and prevention supporters sign pink fire trucks and trailers as they travel across the country with the Pink Heals Tour.

It’s breast cancer awareness month and it seems like everyone is doing their part.  The San Marcos Daily Record published on pink paper three times this month, we received dozens of photos from SMCISD of staff members dressed in pink and the hospital has released several awareness stories.  But the most visual display of support was when the Pink Heals Tour came through town.

The tour was started by a fire fighter who volunteered his vacation time to drive a pink fire truck across the country to raise awareness.  He said no one in his family has ever had breast cancer, but he felt like he was doing what we all should be doing – helping to find a cure.

Two pink fire trucks came to the conference center last week and greeted cancer survivors and those who are still fighting.  One woman spoke whose cancer has relapsed several times.  To make things worse, her husband is in the military in Afghanistan.  There are very few situations that are harder than that.  It was great to see the compassion that the pink fire fighter volunteers showed her.

I got a lot of photos that I liked from this event and it was hard to choose which one to post.  I posted a slide show on the Daily Record web site here:  http://www.sanmarcosrecord.com/multimedia/local_story_294182020.html?keyword=topstory
