Last night I covered the Victoria East vs. San Marcos High School football game for the Victoria Advocate.
San Marcos High School doesn’t have a football stadium, but they’re close to Texas State University, which is home to Bobcat Stadium. I shot my very first football game in that stadium about 8 years ago. It’s changed quite a bit since then, but it still feels like home.
On my way to the game last night, thunderstorms skirted the area and for a minute there, I thought I’d need my rain gear. Fortunately for my equipment (not so much for the drought), the rain held off and left us with quite the sunset.
Bobcat Stadium’s end zones are on the north and south ends, so my view of the sunset was mostly blocked by the stands and the pressbox on the west side of the stadium. The sky was still stunning, though, and I tried to work it in to my assignment as much as I could.
I used my D700 body with my 24-70mm f2.8 lens, zoomed out to 24mm at f8. I also used my SB910 speedlight zoomed out to 12mm to add a little fill flash to the foreground while still keeping color in the sky.
Once the game started, I knew I needed to concentrate on action, so I got what I could during pre-game.
The photo at the top of the post was about mid-way through the first quarter. San Marcos kicked an extra-point and I shot low.
San Marcos scored early and often, leaving me with not a lot of highlights to shoot for Victoria East. They gave me a few good plays, though, and I was fairly happy with my take.
Final score was San Marcos 38, Victoria East 12.
