New Season, New Coach, New Digs

Football season is here!  Get excited!

I’ll shoot my first high school game of the season tonight, and in honor of that I’m sharing an assignment I shot a few weeks ago for the Austin American-Statesman.

LBJ High School got a new coach, Andrew Jackson, and I was on hand during the team’s first day of practice to capture him in action.

First I caught up with the team in the varsity locker room.  The booster club had just redecorated a bit with new benches, a television, sound system, AstroTurf and photo prints.  Most of the players were huddled around the TV watching old game footage, which made for a nice moment.

As I looked around, I noticed one kid who was enjoying the simpler pleasures of the new locker room.

After a few minutes it was time to hit the field.  I shot as they warmed up and waited for coach Jackson.

When he arrived, I was determined to get some interaction between coach Jackson and the team.  That’s harder than you think.  Head coaches tend to hang back and see the big picture during practice.

I had to wait a little while, but when coach jumped in, he jumped in with both feet.

Good luck to all you high school football players, parents, coaches, officials, booster clubs, marching bands, dance teams, cheerleaders, sports reporters, photographers and everyone else effected by high school football.  …because really, who isn’t?

Happy football season!
