I went back to the Luling Watermelon Thump on Saturday for the Giant Parade and the watermelon eating contest.
The Giant Parade (that’s the name of it) is really giant! It’s like 14 small towns got together and said, “let’s have a parade!” It was fantastic! Here are a couple of my favorite floats:
After the parade I stopped in an air conditioned coffee house for a quick bite to eat and then headed out to the watermelon eating contest.
I got there early and saw that the Shriner Hobo band was playing. They’re always fun, so I took a few shots and they took a few shots back, haha. Then I saw a couple dancing and waited for them to move directly under a watermelon posted over the pavilion door.
This was my favorite shot from the day and I wasn’t even assigned to shoot it. This couple said they polka dance in the “Come and take it” parade in their home town of Gonzales. They once polka danced for 16 blocks straight.
The watermelon eating contest was wild. There was watermelon flying everywhere. Each of the three contests (three different age categories) had at least 20 participants. The shot at the top of the page was my best and least sticky shot from the youngest group.
