About twice a month I shoot for the San Marcos/Buda/Kyle edition of Community Impact Newspaper. It’s a monthly direct-mail newspaper that focuses mostly on local news and business profiles.
I’ll admit, the business profiles become a bit formulaic to me because they need basically the same shots for every profile – a simple portrait of the owner(s) and/or manager(s), a shot of the outside of the building, a shot of the inside of the building, and a shot of whatever product they sell. It usually takes about 15-20 min.
Onion Creek Kennels was a slight change in the program. I still needed a portrait of the manager, Jaime Bragg (and her dog, “Cutter” CH Overo Cut To The Chase)…
…but the rest of the list was a bit longer. There wasn’t just one main area or one main product or service to capture. They do many things and have many animals running around, so it was a little less formulaic than normal.
The best feature of this place was the swimming pool. How many kennels do you know with a swimming pool?
When the dogs get hot, especially the larger dogs, Bragg takes them next door to her back yard, where they can splash, swim and play in her pool to cool off.
Monotony isn’t really something that I have to worry about much in my job on most days, but when it occasionally does happen, it’s nice to get an assignment that shakes things up, even if only a little.
