Weather advantage

Terrible storms have blown through the country this year and my heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones and homes.

Down here in central Texas, we’re still praying for some rain.  We’ve gotten a few storms, but they’re nothing compared to what’s happening in Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas.

No, the storms down here don’t make us stop shooting our regular assignments.  But they do change how we shoot our regular assignments.  I’ve seen some great examples over the past few weeks of photographers taking advantage of the interesting weather patterns.

The shot at the top is one example.  I was shooting a baseball game in south Austin just before a thunderstorm rolled in.  The skies aren’t as dramatic as they could have been because the game was canceled after the third inning, but I took advantage of light as the players were introduced.

Here’s another shot:

These shots could have been taken any partly cloudy evening, so you don’t need to wait for a storm.  If you want a great example of using weather to your advantage, check out this recent post by Jay Janner at the Austin American Statesman: http://photoblog.statesman.com/longhorns-overcome-rain-and-the-aggies

And now for one more shot (non-weather related) from the dugout:
