Dashing Dachshunds

Sunday I shot the final races of the 14th Annual Buda Wiener Dog Races for the Statesman.

I love small town festivals like this one.  There are a couple weekend festivals in this area that draw people from around the world, and this is one of them.  People train their dogs for years to be in these tiny races and travel from all over to compete.

This year’s winner was Princess Mia, who is passing Boomer in the top photo and leaving Holly in the dust.  Princess Mia won a trophy, a gift basket and a check for $500.  It’s serious business.

Here are some images from Sunday:

Keith Rodriguez of Hewitt, TX uses a noise maker and a dog toy to call his dog, Alex.

Dachshund Smokin’ Sadie (right) is clearly upset as Vitto (left) passes her for a preliminary race win.

Angie Blue of San Antonio kisses her dog, Red Log, after a preliminary win.

Jeremy O’Sullivan of College Station uses squeaky toys to call his dog, Vito.

Cosmo watches from the lap of Richard Loggins on Sunday as the final races of the 14th Annual Buda Wiener Dog Races wrap up.

Kim Nichols of Austin celebrates a preliminary race win with her dog, Daisy.

Pam Leifeste of Fredericksburg and her dog, Princess Mia, share a moment after winning the championship race at the 14th Annual Buda Wiener Dog Races at Buda City Park on Sunday.  Leifeste whispered to Princess Mia, “We did it!”
